As we begin peeling back the layers of inflammation to identify the root causes of disease, we quickly realize that it is multifactorial. The progression of chronic disease can stem from various underlying factors, including gut-based inflammation, toxins, oxidative stress, nutritional deficiencies, or mental and emotional stress, to name a few. If all of these factors can contribute, how do we determine which area is most significant for each patient? How do we guide the individualization of patient care?

By examining markers of gut-based inflammation, such as Zonulin, LPS, and sIgA, alongside measures of oxidative stress—like 8-OHdG, F2-Isoprostane, and intracellular glutathione levels—we gain a comprehensive overview of the underlying issues driving a patient’s inflammation. These markers are associated with major health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, our two leading causes of death. They also align with the principles of functional medicine, which focus on assessing gut-based inflammation and the body’s toxic burden. The Gut Ox Stress test from Precision Point Diagnostics provides key insights into root causes of inflammation.

Learning Objectives:

1) Explore how markers of detoxification and gut health, when analyzed together, inform cornerstone treatments in integrative and functional medicine.

2) Understand the significance of different markers of leaky gut and the distinct information provided by Zonulin, LPS, and sIgA.

3) Review research on oxidative stress and its role in driving disease progression.
